WALL SPACE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

..as you can see from the picture above the long awaited photography exhibition in now on the Gallery wall and open for everyone to see. The photographs we are exhibiting are by 13 local photographers and as I said the other day there are some smashing pictures to be seen. Each photographer is exhibiting three pictures one of which is of Wanstead, I am delighted to say we have thirteen completely different views of Wanstead. One of the things I love about photography is the way we all see things differently...

Although the exhibition is now open Wednesday to Saturday 10.30 till 5pm and Sunday 10.30 till 4pm the opening night is  next Saturday.

If you live in Wanstead or just passing through stop for a few minutes and have a look as these lovely pictures...

We are also raising money for out local childrens hospice Haven House who do fantastic work. If you'd like to help with an online donation click here and go through to the donations page.

You can find the exhibition here:

JUDGEMENT DAY...

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

....not in that sense of course...What you see in the above picture are some of the photographs that we are putting on display starting September 3rd at the Gallery. They are all by local photographers, I can tell you there are some lovely pictures that will be going on the wall. The reason they are spread out over the floor? Well to add a little spice to the exhibition there is also a competition, I wasn't the judge I hasten to add, the winner, you'll have to wait until the opening evening 6pm till 9pm on September 10th to find out that.

We are also raising money for Haven House a local
children's hospice who do fantastic work. If you'd like to make an online donation to this very worthy cause you can just click here to go through to the Haven House donations page.

EVENING TIME...

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

I had a stroll the other evening, nowhere in particular. I did however end up wandering past a floodlit Christ Church. The spire looked beautiful framed by the trees on Christchurch Green....

BUTCHERS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

...unless you are a Wanstead resident you probably won't be too excited by the arrival of The Ginger Pig on our High Street. Wanstead folk are however especially as we have lost our old butcher. It's a great shop with a wonderful display and selection of meats, I can personally vouch for the sirloin steak, delicious. Being one of the world's leading experts on sausage roll eating I can say they too are just wonderful...

...anyway before I get too carried away raving about food I was also struck by this lovely brass name and pig motif set in tiles at the entrance. As I'm always telling anyone who will listen you must look up and look down not just straight ahead otherwise you might miss something... a very stylish entrance..

A LITTLE...

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

....obessed when it comes to bridges. You may have seen this bridge before, its quite near my home. Some days the sun goes down and you get a magical sky behind it,  then it's transformed for a short period  from a bridge to a sculptural form...

.....and you should see the bridge I have just found, a picture later this week hopefully...

PEEKING....

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

A lovely surprise earlier today... I came across this solitary sunflower peeking out from behind a tree in Wanstead High street. There by accident or design I don't know but it's certainly  very welcome...

A FLEETING MOMENT...

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

I popped out for a stroll a little earlier, a wonderful evening, warm but not too much so. The half moon had a haze around it and just for a few moments there was a remarkable sky....

HEEEEEEERES JOHNNY....

World © Geoff Wilkinson/ All rights reserved

....if you are off a certain age you may well recognise the phrase in the title, it comes from the Johnny Carson show in America.

This is of course a completely different Johnny in the picture. I found him strutting his stuff and saying hello to anyone passing  in Woodford Bridge yesterday. He lives I believe in  Hairy Hounds the very handy pet and garden supplies shop. We had a little chat  but obviously it was a bit one sided although he did say 'hello' a lot...

LOOKING EAST....

World © Geoff Wilkinson/All rights reserved

Typically we all look to the West when watching the sun set, I think this applies all over the world. The other day I looked in the opposite direction towards the East and found this amazing cloud formation. I love the way the colour changes dramatically the closer you get to the horizon...

V SHAPED...

                                World © Geoff Wilkinson

There have been some fabulous skies over Wanstead lately especially at sunset. This evening was no exception, I really like the 'V' shape created by the trees with the colour behind and the clouds above....

WHAT....WATER TANKS !!!!

What  do you do with old, unwanted water tanks that you have salvaged from skips? Wanstead guerrilla gardner Marion Temple had a fabulous idea, you fill them with plants, paint them up and hey presto it's going to be another wonderful displays of lovely flowers next year. You can see them at the junction of Harrier Avenue and Mansfield Road just by Wanstead Station.....

CELEBRATION...THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I came across this wonderful couple as I left the Gallery late this afternoon, I just had to stop and ask if I could take their picture. As you may know there had been a 'Patrons picnic lunch earlier in the day in The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace with 10,000 people attending. This couple were just returning when I spotted them, they are Dennis and Edna Stinchcombe, both MBE's by the way, from Bristol but   enjoying the delights of Wanstead for a few days. They are members of The Royal Society of St George, the Patron being Her Majesty the Queen as you can see by the flags and hampers they had a wonderful time despite the rain...

LOVELY...

COLOURS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson/ All rights reserved

You may have seen the picture of the lights in the tunnel  running under the Central Line tube I posted a few days ago, you can check it out here. Anyway the completely opposite of the dark and gloom of that picture is this lovely metal sign at the mouth of the tunnel. I have no idea what it means but I expect it's something to do with the tube line, I was really drawn to the colours and the rust...very vintage I thought..

GUESS WHAT...

I grabbed this picture a couple of weeks ago in our Gallery, any thoughts about what they might be? Bear in mind we also have a craft shop in the Gallery.....

KINDNESS...

    World © Geoff Wilkinson

...it's often a rare comodity with not enough of it in the world these days. One exception are the owners of one of our local  restaurants here in Wanstead. As you can see by the notice on the front reading 'free food for homeless people' the patron of Turkish restaurant Gezi Park in the High Street really is one of the good guys...

HAPPY MONDAY...

                World © Geoff Wilkinson

.....'happy monday' is that another song title? As a lot of people don't really look forward to returning to work after the weekend I though this picture might cheer them up. We have a beautiful cherry tree in our front garden, every year it produces wonderful blossom, as you can see there is also a nice bush next to it. The point is they never bloom at the same time.....except for this year, happy Monday....

ME AND...

                          World © Geoff Wilkinson

.....my shadow, I think that was the title of a song many years ago. Anyway you know I'm always fascinated by the number of string playing musicians I see wandering around Wanstead, well here's another I spotted wandering along the High Street. I really must find out why Wanstead is so popular with them, perhaps we have excellent tutors...

YES, BUT...

 World © Geoff Wilkinson

....is it art?... Dunno..but I find it extremely difficult to walk past a can that has been squashed by a car or lorry and not photograph it, I have no idea why. I though there was a certain amount of irony with this particular squshed can as it has 'super' printed on the side obviously not super enough to stand up to a vehicle running over it...

AGLOW....

     World © Geoff Wilkinson...

You may recognise the above scene but in case you are not a Wanstead resident it's the children playground  on Christchurch Green. Due to the stirling efforts of the @WansteadPlay and Wanstead residents funds have been raised to overhaul the playground and replace much of the equipment. The sun was setting as I passed the other night making the cover of the new child sized car light up, it all looked rather splendid...

LIGHT AT THE END...

    World © Geoff Wilkinson

of the tunnel well not quite but you know what I mean...a little indulgent this is one, it's of those pictures that just appeals to me, there's no real reason for it somehow it just works. It's the lights in the underground passageway that ducks under the Central Line tube and connects Eagle Lane with Falcon Way...

...by the way it's not nearly as dark as it looks..

ART HOUSE...

World © Geoff Wilkinson
Whenever I drive past this house I always stop and have a peek at the window. I don't know anything about sculptures but I do admire the work that is on display, it always looks great. Well done whoever the artist is, it certainly make for a more interesting street...

ps: I rather like the reflections in the windows of the houses opposite I think it just adds another dimension...

SILHOUETTE...

        World © Geoff Wilkinson

If you are a regular follower of this blog you will probably be aware that I find alleyways very photogenic. This one off George Lane in South Woodford is no exception. It's very short as alleys go but I have made several pictures of it already from various angles. The photographs I have taken there just seem to cry out to be black and white and this figure in silhouette I think confirms it....

A FINE SPRING DAY...

     World © Geoff Wilkinson

....and summer must be just around the corner, what a difference from yesterday's picture. It didn't last long yesterday, the snow that is, only a minute or so but it was certainly fast and furious while it lasted. This couple hurrying along Stanstead Road must have been really grateful for the umbrella...

Weather update, according to the very reliable @wanstead_meteo it was actually 'soft hail' and I'm sure that's correct but I think it's more fun to think 'snow'...

SIMPLE...

                      World © Geoff Wilkinson

...just a very simple straightforward picture of Christchurch Green yesterday as I passed on my way to the Gallery.    As you can see the sun was shining and it even feel a little warm...summer must be on the way...

DINNER FOR TWO....

    World © Geoff Wilkinson

...yes i'm back, just when you thought you'd got rid of me, apologies for the absence, just an amazingly busy time in life.

...anyway I was in the kitchen preparing dinner for a family meal when glancing out the window, I spotted this fox with a very large bone. I would like to think he was taking it home to feed his family as well....

A LITTLE FROST...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

This is another 'car park' picture you may have seen the other one on my last post. I took this a few days ago before the weather warmed slightly....ever so slightly I might add. I spotted these frost covered leaves as I parked the car in the car park just off Wanstead high street, I just liked the shapes. Although I wish I had been there earlier when the frost was heavier...ah well c'la vie...

A LTTLE DRAMA...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

...I had to pop up to Birmingham a few days ago to a trade show. It was a long day walking around the stands and chatting, all in a days work though. However on the walk back to the car the sky was amazing, so dramatic, I just had to stop and grab a picture...

THE CRAFTSMAN...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

...like many people I quite often spend a large part of my day on computers, mobile phones etc, it's just the way it is these days with electronic devices. So you can imagine my delight when I came across this gentleman, as you can see he was laying this classic Victorian style path with small tiles in front of a house in Nightingale Lane. So wonderful to see a craftsman working at a steady pace doing something he enjoyed instead of getting frustrated when a computer takes 10 seconds to react instead of two....

If you need a mosaic tiled hallway, a garden wall or a house restored try Paul Smith, of aps designs you can find him via The Wanstead Village Directory...

THE ANSWER...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

....at last here's what we think the answer is...

George a local builder (pictured below) popped into the Gallery a couple of weeks ago with the mystery object, he knows I'm always curious about things. He is renovating an old factory in Blackheath south east London with his firm Billingford Builders when the discovery was made. The building in question was some form of old photography factory. The mystery piece of timber complete with attached marbles was a simple way of hanging photographic prints to dry. Just slip the print between the marble and the wood and hey presto. Ingenious when you think about it...

HMMM...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

.....now what on earth? If you think you know what this is then please let me know, a gent brought it into the Gallery last week. We think we know what it is but I'll keep you in suspense 'till later in the week, but do drop me a line if you think you know...a clue, it came from an old industrial building being refurbished in Blackheath, South London..

ITS MAGIC !....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

ok....so it's not magic really but here's the challenge. How to make a rainy, grey, overcast sky turn blue? Simple, just photograph the reflection of it in the hood of a blue car....

OH IMOGEN...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

You may have noticed it been a little damp and windy in Wanstead for the last couple of days. That of course is courtesy of the storm named Imogen. I took this picture at about midnight last night,  I know it looks like an enormous garden pond but it is in fact the road at the junction of Limes Ave and Elmcroft Ave. I'm so pleased I had my flippers with me....you may also notice if you look carefully that I managed to photograph a flying saucer at the same time...

COBBLES PART 2...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

You may have seen the picture of this cobbled alleyway that I published earlier this week, you can click here if you missed it. Anyway this is the 'reverse' shot looking in the other direction. I like way the curves of the round drain cover match the curved arch at the end of the alley, the looming figure helps as well...

COBBLES & ALLEYWAYS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I just can't resist cobbles, photographically that is, I find it impossible just to walk by and be satisfied with a glance. There has to be an angle, in this case from ground level, with these particular cobbles it was a double delight as they are in a short covered alleyway. What photographer can resist an alley, they always lead somewhere to make an interesting picture....

EVENING TIME...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

There are two sides of Christ Church that spring into mind when I think about Wanstead churches. One is from the front with the main entrance at the base of the spire, the other is the view across Christchurch Green. Winter or summer it's a splendid view. However the other evening as I was walking in  Wanstead Place when I noticed this view, normally in daylight the trees tend to 'take the edge' off this view but at night with the floodlight on it took on an attractive different look...

SITTING PRETTY...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I have to say I'm more of a dog person rather than cat person. That said as I pulled up in the car at the Gallery the other day this lovely looking cat was sitting on a roof just watching the world passing by.. I'm not sure if it was a boy or a girl but whatever it was very pretty and sitting so elegantly..

Apologies for the quality of the picture it as taken with my much dropped i.phone from quite a distance...new i'phone collected this week

January has been a very busy month but hopefully back to normal now (whatever that is), if you live locally we look forward to seeing you at next Sundays Wanstead Farmers Market...

TRAVELING LIGHT....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I spotted these festive lights in the window of Darrell James Travel in the High Street just before Christmas. I'm a big fan of Christmas lights and I liked the way these stood out in the dark, with the warm colours in the room it looked very cosy....can't wait for next years show...

SKY AT NIGHT...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was in the High Street the other night when this little Pomeranian named Sky happened along on it's nightly stroll. As you can see from the quizzical look it wondered what I was up to with my cameras, I managed to get this quick snapshot before it passed by. The composition is a little unorthodox it know but I quite like the balance with the owners foot in the picture....
