A few days ago I posted a picture of my lawn covered in dandelions, I was debating whether to mow it or not. The view of most people was 'don't cut it, leave it' so I did. Anyway this afternoon I found this fellow chomping away at the the flowers that had turned to seed heads, taking them away to line a nest perhaps , I don't know..
I am no ornithologist so if anyone knows what variety it is please let me know...
Beautiful colours. I have no idea what it is, though. We certainly don't see this one on this side of the ocean.
ReplyDeleteMy blogger friend Theresa indicates it is a European goldfinch. She can be found here:

Ah.. thanks William, I shall be keeping my eyes open for a return visit..
DeleteHi Geoff, looks like William beat me to it, and I believe this is what it is. I knew it was a finch, just wasn't sure what type of finch. Lovely photo.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda glad you like it..

ReplyDeleteI stay a long time with my camera when a bird like this is in my garden
ReplyDeleteYes patience is needed..
DeleteLOVE the goldfinch! Our American goldfinch (very different from yours) lines its nests with thistledown so you are probably correct that this European Goldfinch is gathering nest material.
ReplyDeleteAh thats what it was up to...
DeleteWow! What a beauty. Glad you decided not to mow... it paid off. :)
ReplyDeleteIt certainly did..
