THE WANSTEAD FRINGE...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

As you can see my Wanstead Fringe badge arrived yesterday courtesy of Wansteadium. I was going to do a more conventional picture of it but then I though what the heck !

As you know I am doing 'photowalks' around Wanstead as part of our Fringe effort, to make things easier for people I have added two extra walks at different times so hopefully more people will be able to join in the fun.

I will post these new times and dates later today here on Wanstead Daily Photo.

*Just so you know, no Photoshop involved in the above picture just lots of sticky tape.

WANSTEAD SKY

Another fabulous sky yesterday evening, couldn't resist it. I just want to make the most of these evenings before the winter comes.

THE CORNER HOUSE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

This is the Corner House on the High Street a former doctor's surgery, everybody knows it. It was renovated by T-Space architects who are on the upper floors,  Age Concern occupy the ground. The interesting thing is the plaque on the Grove Park side of the building, it is for James Bradley. Bradley, 1693 - 1762, was the third Astronomer Royal and according to the plaque 'was first to demonstrate that the earth moved around the sun'. I believe his observations were made from The Rectory in Wanstead, now whether that was on the site of the Corner House or not I do not know. As ever any further information welcome.

SUMMER EVENING..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Apologies, this picture should have gone on yesterday, I am running a little late at the moment, the heavy rain on Saturday has caused us a few problems.

I just couldn't resist taking this picture, it's of Evergreen Field on the Hight Street. A little late afternoon sun backlighting the grass and leaves, perfect for a photograph.

LITTLE MISS MUFFET ETC..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I found this little fellow this morning. It has spun a web between a box bush and the house wall, probably a couple of feet apart, how do they do that? He or she is tiny, maybe a centimetre including the legs. You can't really see any markings or detail with your eye but fortunately I had a macro lens on the camera so here it is in detail. Any thoughts on species leave me a comment please.

END OF A PURRFECT DAY...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Well that's the end of the bank holiday, back to work. It's been a smashing day, relaxing, laid back just chilling out really. This cat spent most of the afternoon lying on the warm road snoozing in the sun and I'll bet he returns again tomorrow, definitely not worried about returning to work.

SECRET FRUIT.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I know of a lovely front garden, picket fence, flowers in pots, the lot. Walking past this week for the first time I noticed these tomatoes growing among the flowers, they looked great. Much better than mine did last year, I guess I just don't have green fingers. Where are these lovely tomatoes, ah that's my secret.

And just one last thing for today. I found this little guy in the courtyard of the Gallery last week, I hope this is a good sign for the bee population.

COMPARISON.

Photographs World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

I published this photograph of Christ Church this week and thought I would post again the one I took on March 31st, Easter Sunday this year. The bare trees in that picture compared to the latest one gives a totally different feel.

DALEK?

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I saw this traffic bollard parked on George Green the other day. Not quite sure what it was doing there but it probably involved some late night revel involving alcohol. Curiously from a distance it didn't look out of place, sort of like a yellow Dalek checking out Wanstead. Anyway it appealed to me so here's the picture.

SMILEY FACE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was walking past the Church of England Primary School in the High Street when I spotted this sunflower. I magine it's the right time of year for them although in the South of France I seem to recall it's earlier. Anyway early or late it looked really lovely peeking through the fence.

BACK GATE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson- All rights reserved

I had a walk around to the back of Christ Church the other afternoon. There is this lovely gate there with a path leading to a porch and door, I have been there several times before but without my camera so I thought it was time to rectify things and I am so glad I did. The light was great and there was a children's party in progress in the church hall, hence the balloon tied to the gate, it gave the scene a little extra.

ENCHANTING..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was walking across the green that surrounds the war memorial one afternoon recently when I came across this lovely scene. I have photographed this part of the forest once before but in the late afternoon light this gnarled tree and the path passing by it looked enchanting.

A CONTINENTAL FEEL..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I had a walk along the High Street today when the Gallery closed. People were sunbathing on Christchurch Green, walking their dogs and just strolling along, it all had a very continental feel. When I reached Nice Croissant the chairs were stacked up outside and it made a lovely composition that just cried out for a black and white picture.

WANSTEAD FLATS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Yesterday's picture was taken on George Green but because of the buildings on the other side of the green you can't really see the sun go all the way down. Whenever I thinks there is going to be a great sky in the evening I head for Wanstead Flats. We are so lucky to have such a great open space on our doorstep, you really do see some spectacular sunsets from it. I took this photograph from Lake House Road looking west. Standing under a tree enabled me to have the two branches in the top of the photograph, I felt that they were wrapping around me.

END OF THE DAY...

I was on George Green just as the sun was going down, another beautiful Wanstead evening. I don't think I need to say more. Have a good weekend.

A SUMMER EVENING...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I thought I would put on a more tranquil picture today after the hurrying pizza delivery man yesterday. I was passing Wanstead Central Bowls Club in Nutter Lane a couple of  evenings ago, the light was great for photography. The entrance was open looking onto the green and this lady was about to bowl, I thought it made a lovely classic summer evening photograph.

PANNING WITH THE CAMERA.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

Back and forth, to and fro, these bikers are so much part of Wanstead life I felt I had to capture one on camera. Rarely seen during the day they come alive at night.

SILHOUETTE....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Waited in the garden last night for several hours on comet watch. I saw about 5 or 6 and it was an impressive sight, I am so glad I saw them. Photographing them however is a very different story, as far as I am concerned they were very camera shy. No matter which way I pointed the camera they appeared from a different direction, very frustrating, still there's always next year. I am so glad I got the photograph of the sky and clouds on Monday night.

I was walking along Grosvenor Road earlier today looking for pictures when I noticed these metal fire escapes. I really like the stark shapes that they form particularly silhouetted against the sky. Interesting shapes in the most unlikely places.

MOVING CLOUDS.... WANSTEAD STYLE

World © Geoff Wilkinson- All rights reserved

Funny old night last night. I had read somewhere that at the moment there is an abundance of shooting stars in the night sky. I thought I would try my luck in the back garden for a couple of hours and try to capture them. So late last night I was sitting quietly in the garden in the dark when a fox nonchalantly walked by and looked at me as if I was mad. He may well have been right. Anyway, no shooting stars, too many clouds but I did end up with this dramatic picture of the night sky over Wanstead. Let's hope for a clear sky tonight !

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

The weed photograph and comment this week got me thinking. Flowers in blossom are always beautiful but what about when they die ? Take this rose for example, the petals are long gone but it's still got an interesting shape and has intricate detail. It's not always the obvious that's photogenic.

I think they make really interesting shapes when they die.

CONKER SEASON

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Driving through Snaresbrook last evening I saw this Horse Chestnut tree. There is such an amazing amount of 'fruit' on the bough that it almost reaches the grass. Looks like it is going to be a bumper season for conker players.

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME GREAT SKIES LATELY...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Had another wander over to Wanstead Flats the other evening. I found this plant, I assume it's a weed, growing by the side of the road. Weed or not I think it looks great against the sunset.

PARKING ISSUES.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Popped in Jack'S DIY store on Chigwell Road yesterday. Parked in Southview Drive by Jack's back gate and saw his very clever no parking sign 'Gates in Constant Use'. Low and behold got my picture for the day.

VARIATION ...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

The British weather at the moment seems to vary between high summer and autumn wind and rain.  Wanstead Flats where this was taken only a couple of weeks ago was lush and green and now looks parched. However, It doesn't prevent a worthwhile picture and I snapped these grasses against a dramatic sunset.

HAT TRICK..

World © Geoff Wilkinson- All rights reserved

There seems to be an outbreak of puppies in Wanstead at the moment. First there was Pepsi a Beagle next door to the Gallery, then Noel at The Nightingale got Sheba, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and now here is this adorable Border Collie. I spotted 3 month old Toby taking his mistress for a walk along Cambridge Park last Saturday night, a great little guy.

NEW SHOP IN THE VILLAGE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

A new shop opened yesterday, The Wanstead Toy Box opened it's doors. Yes a toy shop in Wanstead, I popped in yesterday on the way home from the gallery, great stuff on display. Modern made wooden toys, soft toys, games, puzzles  and vintage toys. It's open today Sunday, so if you fancy a stroll after the Farmers Market it's just a couple of doors along from Lillies the Florist at the Snaresbrook end of the High Street. As you can see from the picture above I couldn't resist photographing this vintage mechanical monkey with his guitar.

CURLY WURLY'S.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Preparing dinner the other night I opened this pack of beans, described as round. They were grown in England and pretty straight until I came to this pair. It just suddenly ran through my mind, 'could this pair be the start of some new curly regulation' ? Well it had been a very long hot day.

OYEZ, OYEZ EXCITING NEWS CITIZENS...

September, what an exciting month it's going to be. The Art Trail, The Wanstead Festival and now for the first time ever Wanstead is going to have it's own Fringe. The Wanstead Fringe, Edinburgh watch out. Lots of information in the story below, thanks to Giles at Wansteadium for the words !

Announcing… the first ever Wanstead Fringe!
by WANSTEADIUM on JULY 24, 2013
Attention, good people of Wanstead. Are you weary of forever wishing that, if only such-and-such a thing happened in Wanstead, it would be really cool? Do you find yourself looking at other, more funky, areas of London, and thinking ‘That could be Wanstead, if only…’ Have you ever lusted after someone else’s vibe?
Well help is at hand – or, to put it more accurately, self-help.
Wansteadium has very great pleasure in announcing that the first ever Wanstead Fringe will be held this year, between Saturday 7 and Saturday 14 September – that’s the week leading up to the Wanstead Festival on Christ Church Green.
The fringe will consist of a variety of events – including COMEDY! FOOD! DESIGN! PHOTOGRAPHY! MUSIC! BAKING! CYCLING! RACONTEURS! (how classy is that?) and REAL ALE!
This website will be revealing more details in the coming week, but there is one very important message that we would urge all readers to bear in mind: this fringe is self-organised. It’s just ordinary Wanstead folk deciding to do something practical to help make Wanstead better.
Which is where you come in. Would you think of organising an event yourself? There are six weeks in which to get stuff set up – which is do-able if you start now. And if you want to be involved but don’t think you can arrange an event, will you help with one of the other events? Or maybe you’d help with telling other people about the fringe?

THE HEAT OF THE DAY..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

It must have been the hottest day ever yesterday. On the way home from the Gallery I stopped off to have a look at the allotments in Redbridge Lane West, I wondered how the plants were coping with the heat. The scarecrow, all dressed up in finery looked as if it was coping well. There were apples on a tree, a solitary blackcurrant and what I think is corn growing. All going well then despite the heat.

What a great looking shed in the background, real allotment style.

THE EARLY BIRD..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I took this picture a couple of mornings ago at about 5am, I was looking East from Wanstead. As you can see from the glow in the sky and the cloud formation it was a magnificent dawn. The amazing thing was how quickly the sky changed, I just managed to capture this view, a few minutes later the sky had changed completely and the drama had gone.
