WHERE ON EARTH....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Now here's a mystery that I would like to solve. If you go to the High Street end of Nightingale Lane, stand against the wall of the United Reformed Church and look straight along the Lane what do you see? Well if you look very carefully, in the distance several miles I'm guessing, you will see the rather grand house in the centre of the picture above. It doesn't look like a modern building more of a small old mansion. I have no idea where it is, Chigwell perhaps, or a bit further, any suggestions welcome.

Apologies for things being a bit hit and miss this week so much going on.

THE CASE OF THE MISSING..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I spotted this lonely trainer on my way into the Gallery this morning, where was it's other half? A case for an amateur sleuth perhaps. I do like finding these odd little bit's and piece's, I'm always on the lookout.

BLACK AND WHITE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

You know how fond I am of an old building especially finding an angle that I have never seen before. As you can see in this photograph I have found another.  This time it's the back of the old antique shop in the High Street. The combination of the tiled roof, old brick wall and wooden cladding did it for me.

WOOF, WOOF, BARK, BARK...

All pictures World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Despite the rain it was all action at the Wanstead Village Dog Show in the gardens of Christ Church yesterday. There were many categories, my favourite was the 'best six legs', thats 4 dog legs plus two owners legs, any way it was a great afternoon with a terrific turnout. Another Wanstead success story, here's a small portfolio of pictures in case you couldn't make it.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

SUNDAY...

I just grabbed this picture from the passenger seat of the car. We were stopped at the new traffic lights by George Green, the composition just appealed to me. Enjoy your Bank Holiday Monday. I am going to the Dogs, I do mean the Wanstead Dog Show.

A BIT OF COLOUR...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I have always liked the look of the barber shop in the High Street, it looks like a proper place to go for a haircut.  The dark colours of the outside, with the traditional red and white barbers pole, contrasting against them fill me with confidence regarding the tonsorial excellence on offer. So imagine my surprise when yesterday I saw these fabulously coloured chairs outside, they were a riot of colour on an overcast day, at least it was when I passed by, they looked great. I particularly    like the little moustaches on the top rung of the back of each chair. Judging by the number of customers I see in there I know it's very popular with Wanstead gents, if I had any hair to speak of myself I'd be a regular.

SIMPLE AND STYLISH...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved
I was walking along the High Street earlier today on the way back to the Gallery, as I passed Provender, Wanstead's French bistro I couldn't help but stop and take this picture. I really like the symmetry of the table displays and the hedging, very stylish.

YOU NEVER KNOW..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

One of the things I like most about out Gallery is you never know who will be coming through the door next. Sometimes someone wants a picture framed, sometimes an archival print of a precious family photograph. Then there's the restoration side of our business, old and battered pictures need restoring, we do a lot of this, it helps to bring old memories to life. There seems to be a big upsurge in looking up family history, it doesn't matter what you find out about a relative or ancestor and how interesting they were there is no substitute for having a photograph of them, it brings them 'alive' and makes them real.

When long time Wanstead resident, 90 year old Russell Smith came in he produced a mounted photograph of his brother RAF Squadron Leader William Smith DFC with a newspaper inscription beneath it. Russell was born in a house overlooking George Green, Wanstead and has lived here all his life except for a short period when he lived in Canada after the war. Like his brother William he too was in the RAF during the war although not flying.

William was a bomber pilot during World War 2 and was killed in action on the 23rd February 1943, a precious photograph indeed. The interesting thing is that Russell has been researching his brothers death for thirty years and has done a very thorough job.

William was at first in Bomber Command where he completed his tour of 30 trips unscathed. This in itself is remarkable when you consider the average life expectancy of the aeroplane itself was only 22  trips. For the pilot there was only a 25% chance of surviving the first tour and on the second tour only a 2% chance of survival. Having completed his first tour William then volunteered to join the PFF or Pathfinders, he was assigned to 7 Squadron at RAF Oakington in Cambridgeshire who were flying Stirling bombers before changing to Lancasters. The Pathfinders job was to fly ahead of the main force on raids and mark the target with coloured flares to enable more accurate bombing of the target, probably the most hazardous job in Bomber Command.

On the night of February 2nd 1943 William's aeroplane was attacked by a German night fighter flown by Rhinehardt Knacke while on a mission to Cologne. The Stirling bomber and it's crew was to become Knacke's 47th victim in the air war, Knacke himself was later shot down that night by a Halifax bomber on the same raid.

Russell has painstakingly put this together over the years and the photograph that we restored and all the information that he has gathered will be presented to Brentwood School which they both attended.

As I said ' you never know who's coming through the door next'

Many thank's to Russell for taking the time to talk to me and allowing me to use his and his brother's story here on Wanstead Daily Photo.

OLYMPIC PARK...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - all rights reserved

I popped over to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford a few days ago just to have a look around. I have to say I was really impressed, lots for everyone to do, play areas for the children, walks along the river bank, cafes, something for all ages. I took this picture of the Olympic Stadium and the ArcelorMittal Orbit reflected in the glass wall of the Aquatics Centre, I kind of like the blue colour, very aquatic.

Can't wait for the 1st June when I will be doing a photo walk at the park. Two places left just contact the Gallery on 020 8530 1244 for more information.

Remember a few days ago I published a picture of some double gates in Voluntary Place and I wondered what was behind them.  Well, here's another little mystery for you and this time it's in Cowley Road.  If you are just passing through either on foot, car or bicycle, it just looks like an attractive road with two rows of identical terrace houses.  Stop though  almost in the middle and between two houses is a big set of double gates leading where?  Big enough for a horse and cart to get through, what lies behind them? Is there a yard or an old stable building as there is at the rear of our Gallery.  Perhaps the house that the gates are part of was once a small shop, one of many dotted around Wanstead, it's a thought.  If anyone knows the answer please drop me a line.

STONE STEPS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

How much more is there to discover in Wanstead? Last weekend I came across this "hidden" gem, beautiful stone steps worn down over the years.  I am not going to say where they are, it's up to you to guess.

VINTAGE, IT'S ALL THE RAGE..

Pictures World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I had a wander in the sunshine yesterday up to Christ Church, the Past and Present vintage craft fair was taking place. Lots of interesting stuff to be seen, I was particularly struck by this stall selling vintage jewellery and buttons, so many interesting shapes, colours and designs As always great to see so many Wanstead folk supporting a local event. Don't forget these fairs both at Christ Church and the library are regular monthly events so do pop in and have a browse.

A BIT OF EARLY SUMMER..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

It felt like a lovely, warm early summers day as I walked across Nightingale Green earlier today. A bit of sunshine just makes everything look better. I spotted these buttercups in amongst the daisies, looked to me like the daisies were ganging up on them, hopefully a smashing weekend weatherwise.

SEA SHELLS FROM THE SEA SHORE NOW IN WANSTEAD...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

You have probably noticed how well kept and attractive the front garden is at The Corner House on the High Street. Well the other day I wandered around the back and that was looking pretty smart as well. What really caught me eye though was these sea shells that someone had taken the trouble to line up on the 'rustic' brick wall. Nice touch.

EXTRAORDINARY SKY..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I took this picture a few weeks ago late in the afternoon. As you can see there was a dark grey sky but with these extraordinary light coloured clouds that appeared to be travelling upwards. I don't ever recall seeing anything quite like it before.

SUNDAY, SUNDAY..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I know it's Tuesday but I really like this picture that I took last weekend. It was a typical Wanstead Sunday families together, dads pushing buggies, joggers, dog walkers and these guys playing football on Christ Church Green. Perfect Wanstead.

NEWSFLASH.. THE QUEEN IN WANST....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

As you can see by the picture I had to go into pararazzi mode and shoot through the bushes to secure this exclusive photograph of Royalty. Immaculately dressed as usual, her hand was waving as she looked out on Cowley Road. I couldn't believe my luck to have gotten this close. Of course it's all a fairy story, it's just a photograph of a model of the Queen in the front window of a house. The hand however does wave....

ANNE FRANK....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

My friend Rosemary is a member of the Highams Players an excellent local drama group, they normally put on around three plays per year. This time she is directing their next play 'The Diary of Anne Frank', I'm sure you know the story. It's going to be on at Wanstead House on the 5th, 6th and 7th of June. You can pick up a leaflet with full details from us at our Gallery  'eightyfour', 84 Nightingale Lane, Wanstead or check out their website here. They put on excellent productions and I am sure this one will be well worth seeing.

WAITING FOR THE FAMILY...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved
This little cat appears most nights in the same spot in Chester Road, sitting in waiting when I pass by on my way home from the Gallery.  One evening I saw him/her rushing to greet a family as they arrived home.  I can only imagine that this is the intent and why he or she waits there patiently. So cute.

HAVE A NICE WEEKEND..

    World © Geoff Wilkinson

Spotted this couple on the boat on the River Stort a few days ago, the same day as I discovered the white duck. They looked very calm and peaceful, have a good weekend.

ABSTRACT VIEW OF CLOUDS..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved
Smashing sky as the sun got lower on Tuesday evening. I couldn't resist taking a picture,  although I do have to curb my enthusiasm  for sky photography otherwise I wouldn't publish anything else. Anyway to make it a little different I photographed it reflected in my car window and so picked up reflections from other odds and ends. Not conventional I know but I do rather like it.

EARLY MORNING...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I came across this little scene early yesterday morning in a Wanstead garden. It was just a shaft of sunlight creeping inbetween two buildings, the backlighting on the Dandelions however made it a lovely picture.

DUCK!

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I had a trip to Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire a few days ago, it's a lovely spot. The River Stort runs close by, I spotted this character swimming along quite happily. I don't ever recall seeing an all white duck before, perhaps she or he was hoping to be a swan ?

GOOD MORNING...

© Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I walked to the gallery this morning in the sunshine, said hello to a couple of people, spoke to a young lady out jogging, she was on her way to see the bluebells in Wanstead Park before they finally fade. What a lovely start to the day. I passed this bush growing over a wall in Nutter Lane, I have no idea of the   name or species but it looked glorious, such vibrant colour. Enjoy the weekend.

WOOD AND TILE...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

One of the things I enjoy most about producing this blog is discovering something new. I was walking across Christ Church Green, a journey I've made countless times before when I spotted this wonderful woodwork on the side of this building. I really like the horizontal lines of the planks and the tiles on the adjoining roofs. If it wasn't for the bricks on the building behind it would be like being whisked back in time. Where is it I hear you cry, well it's the flank wall of local estate agent Petty Son and Prestwich in Woodbine Place. Always something new to discover.

?...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Can't quite get my head around this bush. It's in our front garden, as you can see from the picture it has sprouted two different coloured flowers, what's that all about then! Is it unique, any thoughts please let me know.
