ICE AGE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Hmmm.. I seem to be having a black and white week. My trip to Wanstead Flats wasn't completely spoiled by the rain, I did manage to grab a few pictures. I took this one at Alexandra Lake, I just liked the way the broken ice had been left in among the stones and leaves.

A LITTLE RAIN..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I popped over to Wanstead Flats on Saturday, I haven't been there for ages, I though I'd just see if anything was going on. As you can see the from the photograph it started to rain as I arrived so I shot this picture through the car windscreen. Not too disappointed, I quite like the out of focus figures in the background escaping from the rain.

ALEXANDRA LAKE

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

The other evening I popped over to Alexandra Lake on Wanstead Flats, I haven't been there for some time. It was a bit of a surprise to see a great deal of it covered in a floating 'growth' of some sort. This poor lake does seem to suffer what with the flooding last year. Now that Jubilee pond has been regenerated and looks great perhaps Alexandra Lake could be next on the list when funds allow?

COULDN'T RESIST..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I took this picture on my visit to Jubilee Pond on Wanstead Flats the other evening. I couldn't resist taking this shot as the sun sank lower, a minute or so later it had disappeared. I have to say Wanstead Flats is a great place for sunset watching.

AREA 51

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

You may remember this post from last week, it showed the mysterious markings on a Wanstead pavement. Well this week I discovered this white arrow and tracks on Wanstead Flats. If you are a conspiracy theorist or interested in extra terrestrials you will know all about Area 51. Perhaps Wanstead will become Area 51a.

WHAT ON EARTH..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I really like this photograph, you have to look twice and think about it. The trees appear to be upside down and is that yellow disc the sun or a UFO in the picture? Truth is it's a puddle on Wanstead Flats so the trees are a reflection and the yellow disc, it's just a tennis ball floating in the puddle.

SEAGULL

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

When I was a child growing up, I was always told that if you saw a seagull inland it meant that there was snow coming.  Judging by the amount of seagulls on Wanstead Flats at the weekend we must be in for a blizzard. Personally, I think it's just easier pickings for food, mind you it's a long flight just for lunch.

FLYING HIGH..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

It's been some time since I visited Wanstead Flats and the Aldersbrook estate so at the weekend I popped over to see what I could find. First stop Wanstead Flats, I found this guy with what appeared to be on odd shaped kite. I've never seen a kite this shape  before. Anyway it transpires he gets the kite up in the air to catch the wind then hops on his skateboard and hey presto he's pulled along. No worries about miles per gallon!

BONFIRE NIGHT.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Most of the firework displays seemed to have happened last Saturday not on the 5th. However I had a drive around last night and found this family letting off their fireworks on Wanstead Flats, I'm glad they waited till the 5th. In case you are wondering the reflection is on the roof of my car.

THE VIEW FROM ALDERSBROOK..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I owe you two pictures today as I missed yesterday, apologies. I haven't been over to Aldersbrook for ages so I made a trip yesterday evening and I am so glad I did. The photograph above is of Alexandra Lake, it's the one near the City of London cemetery, I arrived just as the sun was setting, the timing was just right.

The second picture above is of Canary Wharf just after the sun went down. Although technically it's not Wanstead it was shot from Wanstead Flats so I think it counts, anyway it really shone out at dusk and I couldn't resist it.

WANSTEAD FLATS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Yesterday's picture was taken on George Green but because of the buildings on the other side of the green you can't really see the sun go all the way down. Whenever I thinks there is going to be a great sky in the evening I head for Wanstead Flats. We are so lucky to have such a great open space on our doorstep, you really do see some spectacular sunsets from it. I took this photograph from Lake House Road looking west. Standing under a tree enabled me to have the two branches in the top of the photograph, I felt that they were wrapping around me.

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME GREAT SKIES LATELY...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Had another wander over to Wanstead Flats the other evening. I found this plant, I assume it's a weed, growing by the side of the road. Weed or not I think it looks great against the sunset.

ALMOST FINISHED..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I took a trip over to Jubilee Pond on Wanstead Flats yesterday to see how things were progressing. What a surprise, it's looking great, the ground work seems to be almost finished and it looks like it just needs planting up.   There is a broad path running all the way around with a viewing platform at one point, it just needs the birdlife back in place to complete it. I am not sure what these logs are for but I hope they are staying and being put to use. I think they fit in  with the environment really well and of course help with the composition of my photograph.

GOLDEN LIGHT..

Another picture from Wanstead Flats taken taken on Saturday evening. The light had a lovely golden colour as the sun set. These grasses look wonderful as they swayed in the breeze.

LOVELY EVENING WALK

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was crossing Wanstead Flats yesterday in the early evening. There was a really great sky and as the sun started to set behind these flowers they turned into silhouettes. Just a simple photograph but I really think it works.

NEW BEGINNINGS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

This is Jubilee Pond on Wanstead Flats, you may remember I photographed it a few weeks ago full of water with dramatic clouds overhead. I visited again this week and what a different scene, the pond has been unable to retain water for some time so it has been drained and is being fitted with a new  impermeable lining. Really good news for the birds and water plants, it should be finished by the summer.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES..

Saturday rain all day, people hurrying with umbrellas, no one dallying. Sunday beautiful, warm sunshine, football on Wanstead Flats with lots of spectators. Perhaps it really is the start of summer. British weather eh !
