JACK the....

...Ripper! While I was sorting out yesterdays taxi picture I came across this other Spitalfield's photograph that I am very fond of. On the 25th January I posted a photograph of an alley in Wanstead after dark. A reader in Canada remarked that it reminded him of old Whitechapel, Jack the Ripper territory, this photograph was taken in very much in that area. I waited for a figure to enter the alley with an open billowing coat, I think it rather captures the atmosphere of that time in a modern way.

  1. Oh, yes, that really suits the mood. Very gloomy and bleak!

    1. I hope the last two pictures fit in with the Whitechapel book you are reading!

    2. It was a good one, rather warped- a novel called The Last American Vampire, following a vampire across more than a century. The Ripper turns out to be one of his kind.

  2. Yeah, I'm clairvoyant... :-) but I'm not in Canada! This one is brilliant too, just goes to show how some parts of London can be photographed and sort of stand still in time, though the graffiti kind of gives it away!

Every time I see a scene like this one I think the Ripper which is why the cab photo yesterday also triggered the thought. I don't know your age nor do I know if you ever went to Madame Tussauds at the time when, in the Chamber of Horrors, they had a Jack the Ripper reconstitution (do they still have it?) It was... bloodcurdling!!! A dark Whitechapel alley with cobblestones, footsteps, a Ripper silhouette, a terrifying scream and then the light was switched on and you saw... well, you know, a prostitute, I forget her name, perhaps Annie Chapman, lying on the ground with her bowels spilled out. I don't think my parents realised until too late that I was too young for some of the scenes of the Chamber of Horrors!!!

    1. This area around Spitalfields can take you back in time especially at night! I might explore it further..

    1. I'm pleased you like it though if I'd thought about the knife I probably wouldn't have hung around for so long!
