I WONDER...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I have mentioned before how often following an alley has led to an interesting photograph. Well this is a bit wider than an alley, it runs parallel with the High Street. I discovered this old building and although not remarkable in itself it looks as if it's an 'original' and so I can't help but wonder the history.

I saw this beauty in Wanstead High Street last weekend with the now rarely seen split windscreen, C reg so it must be dated around 1965. It was in fabulous condition and looked magnificent in the summer sunshine.

PROVENCE ?

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

One could be forgiven for getting it wrong, this not a lavender field in Provence.  It is a sea of Lavender in a garden in Nutter Lane Wanstead. However, with the temperature yesterday being so high it certainly felt like the South of France.

HIDDEN AWAY.

It's another hot one. I thought you might appreciate this photograph of a very shady and cool spot that I found early this morning.  If you want to get out of the sun this tranquil place is just over by Eagle Pond.

PUSSYCAT, PUSSYCAT WHAT CAN YOU SEE?

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved
Wow was it hot in Wanstead yesterday, I don't know what the temperature was but it was certainly more like summer. This cute cat had to evacuate the room and find a cool spot on the first floor window ledge outside. Lets hope the sun continues all weekend, check out WansteadWeather for a forecast.

A WELCOMING GLOW.

With a light under the portico and although not open, The Church of St. Mary the Virgin gave a welcoming glow last night when I took this picture.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA

    Photograph world © Geoff Wilkinson

4th July, it's the day when America celebrates Independence Day. In 1776 America declared independence from Great Britain and the rest as they say is history. The photograph above is of the Quaker Meeting House in Bush Road, I thought it apt in so much as William Penn, born in London in 1644, himself a prominent Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania lived in Wanstead. Happy holiday America.

BURNING BRIGHT

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

This is a more traditional view than the one I posted last night. The soon to be opened Sushi restaurant, with the lights burning bright into the evening as they work towards completion and opening. I really like these evening pictures with the interior lights shining out but with a little blue left in the sky.

UFO'S AGAIN ?

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I spied these hovering lights in the High Street as I was driving through the other night, I did a double take. Glowing lights at night could it be....... anyway it wasn't. They are completely refurbishing what was The Olive Branch and I believe it is to be a Sushi restaurant, good luck to them, I hope it goes well.

GOLDEN LIGHT..

Another picture from Wanstead Flats taken taken on Saturday evening. The light had a lovely golden colour as the sun set. These grasses look wonderful as they swayed in the breeze.

LOVELY EVENING WALK

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was crossing Wanstead Flats yesterday in the early evening. There was a really great sky and as the sun started to set behind these flowers they turned into silhouettes. Just a simple photograph but I really think it works.

LITTLE WHITE SHED

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Sadly we have lost the antique shop in the High Street. Old Cottage Antiques seem to have been there for ever and it's sad to see it go. In the picture on the right you can see Judith's in the background who are also downsizing. On a brighter note, looking for a photograph I discovered this wonderful old shiplap shed by the side of the cottage. I am not sure how old it is but it certainly looks antique in it's own right.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

It's great just wandering around Wanstead looking for interesting pictures, you never know what you will find. Is this the last thing to be demolished or was it the first thing that was built on this site ?

WHEELS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

Watching rush hour traffic on Cambridge Park the other evening at around 5.30 pm, I was amazed how much faster it is at that time of night to be on two wheels rather than four.  This trendy alternative transport is fast catching on. I was surprised at the number of bikes that flew past me.

ARUM LILIES

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

The arum lilies in my garden are in full bloom again and look more profuse than ever this year.  I thought the pure white blooms against the dark green background really makes them stand out.

NIGHT LIGHTS...

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I have been waiting for a while to take this photograph. It's the lights at the zebra crossing on Cambridge Park. It needed a dark and brooding sky to makes the lights stand out. Everything came together last night as we were on the way  home from dinner.

RED, WHITE AND THREE WHEELS!

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

You may remember an American Cop series, Starsky and Hutch in the 1970's.  Their car was a red and white Torino.  While I was taking the picture it seems I was not the only one that was struck by Wanstead's own three wheel version.

STILL LIFE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

There is an alley that runs between Cambridge Park and Woodbine Place. I use it sometimes, it's a handy shortcut if you know about it. Passing through the other day I came across this bottle that someone had placed between the railings, it just appealed to me as a picture.

ANY IDEAS ?

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

This tree is in Camden Road. It has the most wonderful bark, it's full of texture and colour as you can see in this close up photograph. I have no idea what species it is, if anyone knows please drop me a line.

This cute little dog called Pepsi has just arrived in Wanstead.  Three months old and full of fun, I just had to photograph her dancing and running around.  I did however, manage a portrait.

A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was standing outside The George looking at the sunlight coming through the trees the other afternoon and thinking how I could turn it into a worthwhile photograph.  It needed an interesting shape in the frame. Seconds later these two cyclists appeared walking their bikes, lucky or what.

RED DOOR ?

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Walking along Cambridge Park the other day when I spotted this door on the other side of the road. Painted red, made of heavy metal with this striking design on it and with a bright yellow padlock, it intrigued me. With the green ivy growing over it gave the whole thing a great colour palette.

I'VE SOLVED THE PARKING PROBLEM..

© Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I came across this parking technique in Woodbine Place, ingenious or what. You just need a Smart car and you are all set.

There was a famous American detective series called 'Dragnet in the 50's', the memorable phrase was 'the names have been changed to protect the innocent'. As you can see I have changed the number plate.

CRICKET LOVELY CRICKET..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

It's not Lords or The Oval but it is Wanstead's own cricket pitch, in fact we have two. One in Overton Drive and this one is in Nutter Lane, every time I pass there seems to be a match going on. Wonderful sight.

CELEBRATIONS

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

Driving home last night stumbled across this street party in Addison Road. Bunting strung across the road, flags everywhere, and everyone really enjoying themselves. Well done Addison Road this is what makes Wanstead a great place to live, the community coming together.

NOSTALGIA

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

A Wansteadium reader asked me to take a photograph of the swings in the childrens playground on Christchurch Green.  Her grandmother used to take her there to play in the 1940's.  I am sure the structure of the play area and swings has changed drastically so I thought a black and white photograph would be more appropriate. This one is for you Patti. I hope it brings back lovely memories.

NIGHT LIGHTS.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

Are they water fountains bathed in light or really clever street lighting? They are of course the new street lighting under the railway bridge at Snaresbrook end of Wanstead High Street. Full marks to Redbridge for imaginative and decorative use of light.

IRIS

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

So many species, different colours and markings.  This clump of flowers I know are of the iris family but which one?  Found them in a Wanstead Garden while strolling around with the camera .

WHERE ON EARTH.....

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I think this is the most lovely little building, it's hidden away and you have to be very tall to see it. The location is Church Path behind an ivy covered wall next door to the garage. I have been told that it was a toy library many years ago, any information you have would be most welcome, it really intrigues me.

BRING BACK THE BEES

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

Well done to Wanstead residents for planting flowers around the trees in Gordon Road. What a great idea. Hopefully their efforts for doing so will help to bring back the bees. It also makes the pavements look so much more attractive.

NUTTER LANE.

Nutter Lane, one of the oldest roads in Wanstead was named after the Nutter family who were benefactors to the parish.  It was formerly George Lane until the name change in 1934.

MOBS HOLE.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

A former forest side hamlet know as Mobs Hole around 1700 is now called Nightingale Green.  Apparently, money as been set aside to enhance this area of Wanstead which I understand was the original Wanstead Village (please correct me if I am wrong).  We are lucky to have this green space in front of our Gallery.

WEATHERVANE.

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved.

I thought this lovely piece of architecture in Grove Park was worthy of a picture.  Seldom does one see weathervanes these days. This one combined with the ornate tiles and woodwork just stands out.

This Ceanothus bush in Seagry Road was spotted by one of my followers and suggested it might be a good picture, she was right.  This stunning bush looked fabulous in the morning sunlight.  My thanks to her for the suggestion.

D-DAY .

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

A very important moment in history. The 6th June 1944, 69 years ago marked the beginning of the end of World War 11. I asked my friend Geoff, a veteran of that war to pose for this photograph with his medals. I just thought it fitting for today.

ON THE DARK SIDE..

World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

There's something about an alleyway. You are often unsure where it will lead but there is always an urge to explore and find out. I have followed them in many places around the world and invariably they lead to an interesting photograph. This particular one runs from Wanstead High Street to Woodbine Place, I don't think it has a name, it's only a short distance but I knew it had the potential for an interesting picture.

CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN ...

This little guy seems to have got himself into a bit of a predicament. Having taken an awful long time to climb the leaf of this plant he now finds that he has nowhere to go. Perhaps he just wanted a better view.

THERE'S ALWAYS A NEW VIEW...

l
World © Geoff Wilkinson - All rights reserved

I was wandering around Christchurch Green the other day looking for a new angle of Evergreen Field when I came across this view of the spire of Christ Church. It's a view I have never seen before, the spire framed by the trees. Just goes to show there is always a new view of a familiar subject.

I couldn't resist photographing the field.  It is such a beautiful piece of Wanstead, now unique to High Streets in the City.
